Apparitions. Voices. Presences. The sense that something is there, even when nothing can be proven.

They are stories that unfold in silence, often witnessed alone, where the line between perception and reality becomes difficult to define.

Each case is approached the same way: what was seen, what was heard, what was felt, and what, if anything, can be explained. Patterns are examined. Context is considered. But the experience itself is never dismissed simply because it is difficult to measure.

Because across time, geography, and culture, the reports remain strangely consistent.

Something is seen.

Something is present.

Max Planck Institute.

That distinction matters. The Max Planck Institute is one of the most respected scientific research organizations in the world. Its physicists do not investigate law offices in small Bavarian towns as a matter of routine. They were called to Rosenheim in 1967 because what was happening in that office had already exhausted every conventional technical explanation available to the electrical company, the telephone authority, and the local engineers who had been trying to fix it for weeks.

What the physicists found, and what they concluded, and what happened the day the nineteen-year-old secretary left her job, is the case.

The Setting

Rosenheim is a small city in southern Bavaria, situated on the banks of the Inn River in the foothills of the Alps. In 1967 it was an ordinary provincial town, known for nothing remarkable. The law offices of attorney Sigmund Adam occupied a building in the city center. The office had four telephone lines, standard electrical infrastructure, a small staff of secretaries, and nothing in its history to suggest it would become the most scientifically examined poltergeist case in European history.

The disturbances began in the autumn of 1967. They began, as disturbances often do, with things that looked like technical problems.

What Began as Technical Problems

The first signs were electrical. Neon ceiling lights flickered repeatedly and without identifiable cause. Fuses blew at a rate that the building’s electrical system could not account for. Developing fluid leaked spontaneously from the office photocopier, an expensive and disruptive problem that occurred repeatedly despite technical inspection finding nothing wrong with the machine.

The telephone system was stranger. All four of the office’s telephone lines began behaving in ways that the telephone company could not initially explain. Calls were cut off mid-conversation. Calls came in with no one on the other end. And then the bills arrived.

The telephone company’s records showed an extraordinary volume of outgoing calls to the speaking clock, the automated time service reached by dialing 0119 in Germany. The calls were being made from the office’s own lines. The problem was that the office staff denied making them, and the volume was impossible to account for through normal use. Within a five-week period, the instruments recorded approximately 600 calls to the speaking clock. In one fifteen-minute period, the speaking clock had been called 46 times. The mechanical dialing system of the era made that rate of calling physically impossible through normal use of the handset.

The telephone company installed monitoring equipment to track the calls. The calls continued. The monitoring equipment confirmed they were originating from within the office. No one was touching the phones when the calls registered.

The electric company sent engineers. They installed instruments to monitor the power supply. What they recorded were substantial surges in the electrical system with no identifiable external cause. The surges preceded the flickering and the blown fuses. They were not the result of a fault in the building’s wiring. They appeared to originate from within the office itself.

The engineers could not explain what they were measuring. They escalated.

The Investigation Assembles

By December 1967, the case had attracted the attention of Hans Bender, director of the Institut für Grenzgebiete der Psychologie und Psychohygiene at the University of Freiburg, Germany’s foremost parapsychological research institution. Bender was a serious researcher with decades of experience in the systematic investigation of anomalous phenomena. He arrived in Rosenheim with a team and began a methodical examination of the office.

What he found in the first days of investigation went considerably beyond electrical anomalies.

Light fixtures were not merely flickering. They were swinging. Ceiling lamps moved back and forth with no air current or vibration to account for the motion. Light bulbs unscrewed themselves from their fittings. Paintings hanging on the walls rotated on their hooks, sometimes captured on the video equipment Bender had brought specifically to document physical phenomena. Desk drawers opened without being touched. A heavy storage shelf weighing approximately 180 kilograms was reported to have moved away from the wall with no one near it.

The phenomena, Bender and his team observed, were not random. They appeared to correlate with the presence of a specific person in the office.

Her name was Annemarie Schneider.

Annemarie Schneider
<div She was a secretary at the Adam law firm. She had recently gone through a broken engagement and, by her own account to investigators, was frustrated with her job and unhappy in her professional situation.

She was, in the language that Bender and his colleagues would use in their formal reports, the focal agent.

The correlation between Schneider’s presence and the occurrence of phenomena was observed consistently across the investigation. When she walked down the hallway, light fixtures began to swing behind her. The intensity of phenomena decreased the farther she was from any given location. When she left the building, the disturbances subsided. When she returned, they resumed. On the occasions when she was removed from the office during the investigation and then brought back, the pattern held.

Bender documented on video the lights beginning to flicker immediately upon Schneider entering the office. The footage was not conclusive proof of anything. It was documentation of a correlation that Bender and his team observed repeatedly over weeks of investigation.

The phenomena, Bender’s team noted, seemed to be performed by what they described as intelligently controlled forces that had a tendency to evade investigation. Phenomena would occur at the edges of camera frames, or in moments between monitoring periods, or in positions that made precise measurement difficult. This evasiveness was itself a data point that Bender found significant, though skeptics noted it was equally consistent with deliberate human manipulation of the kind that intelligent people performing hoaxes would employ.

The Max Planck Physicists

The involvement of physicists Friedbert Karger and Gerhard Zicha from the Max Planck Institute is the element of the Rosenheim case that most clearly distinguishes it from the majority of poltergeist investigations.

Karger and Zicha were not parapsychologists. They were physicists from one of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions, brought in specifically because the electrical anomalies in the office required expertise beyond what Bender’s team could provide. They conducted formal technical examinations of the electrical system, the telephone monitoring equipment, and the physical environment of the office.

Their conclusion, delivered in a formal report, was that some unknown form of energy was at work.

This is a precise and deliberately careful formulation. Karger and Zicha did not conclude that a poltergeist was present. They concluded that the phenomena they measured and observed could not be accounted for by the physics they knew. Unknown form of energy is the language scientists use when the measurements do not fit any available model and intellectual honesty requires acknowledging that.

Police officers who were present during the investigation also gave official statements confirming they had witnessed unexplained object movements. Their accounts, combined with the formal scientific report from the Max Planck physicists, gave the Rosenheim case an institutional credibility that few poltergeist investigations have ever approached.

The Telephone Records

The telephone monitoring documentation deserves particular attention because it is the most technically verifiable element of the case.

The Deutsche Post, Germany’s national postal and telecommunications authority, installed their own monitoring instruments in the office. This was not Bender’s equipment or the electric company’s equipment. This was the official government telecommunications authority installing official measurement systems to track anomalous call patterns from a private telephone account.

What the Deutsche Post instruments recorded was consistent with what had been reported: a volume and pattern of outgoing calls to the speaking clock that could not be accounted for by conventional use of the office telephones. The calls registered on the monitoring equipment. They were billed to the office account. They occurred at rates mechanically impossible with the dialing technology of the era. And they continued even during periods when investigators were present and watching the telephones.

The Deutsche Post’s formal documentation of these anomalies is archived and has been examined by subsequent researchers. It is not anecdotal testimony. It is official telecommunications authority records showing that something was generating outgoing calls from those lines that the people in the office were not making.

What was making them has not been established.

The Skeptical Case

The skeptical case against the Rosenheim poltergeist is serious and requires full presentation.

The primary criticism of the investigation is methodological. Dutch journalist and skeptic Piet Hein Hoebens, who examined the case extensively, observed that no full report of the investigations was ever published, making it impossible to verify to what extent naturalistic explanations had been genuinely excluded. Hoebens argued that Bender’s accounts showed he may not have made a sufficiently rigorous examination of the evidence, and that his stated beliefs in the paranormal were incompatible with fully objective scientific inquiry.

More specifically, Hoebens noted that Bender omitted from his published accounts the fact that Annemarie Schneider was caught in an act of fraud by a police officer during the investigation. The nature and significance of this incident is disputed: Bender’s defenders argued it was a minor isolated incident that did not account for the overall pattern of phenomena, while skeptics argued it was precisely the kind of evidence of deliberate manipulation that explained the entire case.

The filmed footage of a painting rotating on its hook was also contested. Bender’s initial report described the painting rotating 320 degrees. Subsequent analysis of the Ampex film showed rotation of approximately 120 degrees, a substantial discrepancy that raised questions about the accuracy of the reporting.

Physicist John Taylor argued that the measurements shown by the chart recorder used to track the electrical current meter were likely fraudulently produced, and that the overall explanation for the alleged phenomena was a mixture of expectation, hallucination, and trickery.

The evasiveness of the phenomena, the tendency to occur at the edges of camera frames or between monitoring periods, is consistent with both Bender’s interpretation of intelligently controlled forces evading investigation and the skeptical interpretation of a person performing deliberate fraud who had learned where the cameras were and when the monitors were watching.

These are legitimate objections. They are particularly strong objections given the absence of a complete published investigation record that would allow independent researchers to evaluate the methodology directly.

What the Records Cannot Explain

The skeptical case is strongest on the question of methodology and weakest on the question of the telephone records.

The Deutsche Post monitoring equipment was not installed by Bender. It was not operated by parapsychologists. It was installed and operated by the national telecommunications authority of Germany, using standard official instruments, to measure outgoing calls from a private account because the volume of calls to the speaking clock had generated billing irregularities that required official investigation.

The records those instruments produced showed call patterns that remain unexplained. The rate of calls to the speaking clock during specific periods exceeded what was mechanically possible with the dialing technology available. The calls registered when investigators were present and watching the phones. They registered before Bender arrived and before any parapsychological investigation began, which is to say they preceded any possibility of confirmation bias or methodological contamination by researchers sympathetic to paranormal explanations.

Whatever explanation accounts for those telephone records must account for them in the context of standard government telecommunications monitoring, not anecdotal testimony from interested parties.

No such explanation has been provided.

The Max Planck physicists’ conclusion of some unknown form of energy must also be addressed by any complete skeptical account. Karger and Zicha examined the electrical anomalies with the tools and expertise of professional physicists. Their conclusion was not that they had found evidence of paranormal activity. It was that they could not account for what they measured using the physics available to them. The distinction is important and is precisely the kind of careful formulation that distinguishes genuine scientific uncertainty from credulous endorsement.

What Happened When She Left

On January 1968, Annemarie Schneider left her job at the Adam law firm.

Almost immediately, all activity in the office ceased.

The phones stopped generating unexplained calls. The lights stopped flickering and swinging. The fuses stopped blowing. The photocopier stopped leaking. The paintings stayed on their hooks. The furniture stayed against the walls.

The office of Sigmund Adam returned to being a normal law office in a small Bavarian city.

It has remained one ever since.

The cessation of all phenomena simultaneously with Schneider’s departure is the structural fact of the Rosenheim case in the same way that the cessation of Mothman sightings on December 15, 1967 is the structural fact of that case. It is a temporal boundary that defines the phenomenon and that any complete explanation must account for.

The skeptical explanation is straightforward: Schneider was responsible for the phenomena, either alone or in coordination with other office staff, and when she left she stopped producing them. This is coherent and may be correct.

What it requires is that a nineteen-year-old secretary, with no documented technical expertise, managed to deceive not only parapsychological investigators but also engineers from the electrical company, officials from the Deutsche Post telecommunications authority, police officers who filed official statements, and physicists from the Max Planck Institute, across several weeks of sustained investigation during which monitoring equipment from multiple independent agencies was operational throughout the office.

That is a more complex claim than it initially appears.

What Rosenheim Is

The Rosenheim case is different from Enfield in one fundamental respect.

Enfield’s strongest evidence is testimonial: sworn statements from police officers, audio recordings, the confirmation of Bill Wilkins’ details by his son. The testimony is extraordinary but it is testimony.

Rosenheim’s strongest evidence is instrumental: official telephone monitoring records from the Deutsche Post, electrical measurement data from the power company’s own instruments, and the formal written conclusion of Max Planck physicists who examined the phenomena with professional equipment.

Instruments do not have confirmation bias. They do not want to believe in poltergeists. They do not misremember what they measured. The Deutsche Post monitoring equipment recorded what it recorded, and what it recorded was a pattern of telephone calls that the mechanical telephone system of the era could not have produced through normal use.

That record exists. It has been examined. No conventional explanation has been offered for it that accounts for the full documented pattern under the conditions of official telecommunications monitoring.

What produced those calls has not been established.

Annemarie Schneider left in January 1968.

The calls stopped.

She has denied, in every interview she gave thereafter including a television appearance, having any special abilities or knowledge of how the phenomena were produced.

Whether she was telling the truth is the question the record leaves open.

The office is still there. The telephone company’s records still exist. The Max Planck physicists’ report is still archived.

And nobody has explained the calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Rosenheim case different from other poltergeist cases? The involvement of physicists from the Max Planck Institute and official monitoring equipment from the Deutsche Post telecommunications authority distinguishes it from most poltergeist investigations, which rely primarily on witness testimony. The anomalous telephone records were documented by government instruments before any parapsychological investigation began.

Who was Annemarie Schneider? Annemarie Schneider was a nineteen-year-old secretary at the Adam law firm who was identified by investigators as the focal agent of the phenomena. She had recently gone through a broken engagement and was described as emotionally stressed. When she left her job in January 1968, all activity in the office ceased immediately. She has denied in subsequent interviews having any special abilities or knowledge of how the phenomena occurred.

Did the Max Planck physicists conclude there was a poltergeist? No. Physicists Friedbert Karger and Gerhard Zicha concluded that some unknown form of energy was at work. This is a precise formulation indicating they could not account for what they measured using the physics available to them. They did not endorse a supernatural explanation. They acknowledged they could not provide a natural one.

Was Annemarie Schneider caught faking the phenomena? According to Dutch skeptic Piet Hein Hoebens, she was caught in an act of fraud by a police officer, a fact that investigator Hans Bender did not include in his published reports. The significance of this incident is disputed. Bender’s defenders argued it was an isolated minor incident. Skeptics argued it was evidence of deliberate manipulation that explained the entire case.

What happened to the telephone records? The Deutsche Post monitoring records documenting the anomalous call patterns are archived and have been examined by subsequent researchers. They remain the most technically verifiable element of the case and have not been given a complete conventional explanation.

Why did everything stop when Schneider left? The skeptical explanation is that she was responsible for the phenomena and stopped producing them when she left. The case for this is coherent. What it requires is that she deceived electrical engineers, postal telecommunications officials, police officers, and Max Planck physicists across several weeks of investigation using monitoring equipment from multiple independent agencies. Whether that is more or less plausible than the alternative has not been settled.

This case is filed as SQR-PAR-002.

If you want to be notified when SQR-PAR-003 drops, and when the cases start talking to each other in ways that are difficult to explain, subscribe below.

Subscribe now

That’s all this is. The Enfield case has over thirty witnesses, more than 2,000 logged incidents across eighteen months, sworn police affidavits, audio recordings, photographic evidence, and a formal investigation by the Society for Psychical Research whose committee concluded there was good evidence for paranormal phenomena described by credible informants. modest semi-detached council house in Brimsdown, a working-class suburb in North London. In August 1977, it was home to Peggy Hodgson, a single mother recently separated from her husband, and her four children: Margaret, thirteen, Janet, eleven, Johnny, ten, and Billy, seven. The family rented the property from the local council and had been there since 1967. Nothing in the house’s history distinguished it. No murders, no tragedies, no prior reputation for unusual activity.

Peggy was struggling financially. The area was ordinary. The children attended local schools. Nothing about 284 Green Street, the family, or the neighborhood suggested that what began there in late August 1977 would generate one of the most documented paranormal investigations in modern history.

The timeline

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Knocking sounds begin in the walls. Beds shake at night. The children’s marbles and toy building blocks are thrown across rooms.

August 31, 1977

Peggy calls the police. Police Constable Carolyn Heeps and a male officer attend. PC Heeps witnesses a chair slide approximately four feet across the floor with no visible cause. She later signs a sworn affidavit describing what she saw.

Early September 1977

The Daily Mirror sends reporter George Fallows and photographer Graham Morris. Morris is struck in the face by a thrown piece of Lego while standing in the doorway. He photographs objects mid-flight.

September 5, 1977

Maurice Grosse of the Society for Psychical Research arrives. He will remain involved for over two years, maintaining detailed logs, making extensive tape recordings, and documenting phenomena with available technology.

September 1977

Guy Lyon Playfair, a writer and SPR member with experience investigating Brazilian poltergeist cases, joins Grosse. Together they begin a sustained investigation that will eventually log over 2,000 incidents.

December 1977

An anomalous voice begins emanating from Janet. It starts as whistling and dog-like barks, then develops into a human voice described as elderly, male, harsh, and guttural, entirely unlike Janet’s own voice.

December 1977

Photographer Graham Morris captures photographs of Janet apparently levitating above her bed. The images become the most reproduced and contested evidence from the case.

1978

The voice identifies itself as Bill Wilkins, claiming to have lived and died in the house, having gone blind and suffered a hemorrhage in his favorite chair. Details are later confirmed by Bill Wilkins’ son, who comes forward independently to corroborate specific facts about his father’s life and death in the house.

May 1978

The SPR establishes a formal committee to examine the investigation: Mary Rose Barrington, Hugh Pincott, Peter Hallson, and John Stiles. They interview many witnesses and find much of the testimony clear and convincing. The committee concludes there is good evidence for paranormal phenomena described by credible informants.

September 1978

The main period of activity ends. The Hodgson family continues to live at 284 Green Street. Peggy remains there for another twenty-five years until her death in 2003.

The investigators

Maurice Grosse
<div joining the Enfield investigation. He brought comparative context that Grosse lacked. He later wrote This House Is Haunted, the most comprehensive account of the investigation. Playfair was candid in acknowledging that the children had faked some incidents, while maintaining throughout his life that this did not account for the whole record.

The SPR include heavy furniture moving independently across rooms, including a large chest of drawers witnessed moving by investigators. Objects were thrown, sometimes striking visitors. Marbles and toy building blocks were found to be warm to the touch when recovered, which Grosse noted as unusual. Fires appeared to start spontaneously. Pools of water appeared with no obvious source. Electrical equipment failed persistently: photographer Morris had expensive flashbulbs drain of power immediately after charging; BBC reporters found their tapes damaged and recordings wiped; metal components inside recording equipment were found bent out of shape. Investigators estimated over 400 incidents of objects flying across rooms.

Levitation

The most visually striking claim of the case is that Janet was observed levitating above her bed on multiple occasions. Photographs taken by Graham Morris in December 1977 appear to show her suspended several feet above the mattress. The photographs remain contested. Skeptics have argued they show Janet bouncing from the bed as from a trampoline, and investigator Melvin Harris pointed to photographs taken by a remote-controlled camera, not visible to Janet, which he argued showed her in gymnastic positions rather than genuine levitation. Grosse and Playfair, who on several occasions witnessed Janet in the air at moments when they believed jumping impossible, maintained that the photographs did not fully represent what was observed directly.

The voice

Beginning in December 1977, a voice began emanating from Janet that was entirely unlike her own. It was described consistently by those who heard it as elderly, male, harsh, and guttural. Over time it engaged in extended conversations with investigators. It identified itself as Bill Wilkins, claiming to have lived in the house, to have gone blind in his later years, and to have died in his favorite chair after suffering a hemorrhage. The investigators did not initially know whether any person named Bill Wilkins had ever lived at 284 Green Street. Bill Wilkins’ son subsequently came forward independently to confirm that his father had lived in the house and had died there in the manner described, including specific details about the position of the chair he died in.

Over two hours of recorded material from the voice exists. Playfair noted that one of the voice’s habits, suddenly changing topic mid-conversation, was also a habit Janet displayed in her ordinary speech. Grosse and other investigators went to considerable lengths to test whether Janet was producing the voice through conventional means, including placing their hands on her throat and covering her mouth in various configurations. They reported that the voice continued in conditions that should have made normal ventriloquism impossible, while acknowledging they could not rule it out definitively.

Part of the original audio was enhanced to remove noise.

The trickery

The instances of confirmed or probable faking by Janet and Margaret are real and must be stated plainly, because ignoring them is where analysis of this case most commonly goes wrong.

A video camera set up in an adjoining room caught Janet bending spoons and attempting to bend an iron bar. Grosse himself observed Janet banging a broom handle on the ceiling and hiding his tape recorder. A remote-controlled still camera timed to take photographs every fifteen seconds captured what investigator Melvin Harris described as the girls in gymnastic positions. Janet later acknowledged that she and her sister had faked some incidents, describing it as wanting to see whether the investigators would notice.

Daily Mirror reporter George Fallows, who concluded from his investigation that the family was not engaged in total trickery, estimated the proportion of incidents attributable to the children’s faking at approximately two percent of the total logged activity. Grosse and Playfair arrived at similar estimates through their own analysis. The SPR committee, having reviewed the full record, concluded that trickery could not explain the case as a whole.

The honest position requires holding both things simultaneously: some of what happened at 284 Green Street was manufactured by Janet and Margaret, and the investigators who were present for eighteen months believed that the majority of what they documented was not.

The witnesses

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" school sports champion, physically capable of the acrobatic movements that the levitation photographs could represent. The voice attributed to Bill Wilkins displayed habits consistent with Janet’s own speech patterns. The investigators, particularly Grosse, came to the case with prior experiences that made them sympathetic to paranormal explanations, and Grosse’s personal grief may have shaped his interpretation of events. The SPR had an institutional interest in finding genuine paranormal phenomena. Ed Warren, who visited briefly, was characterized by other investigators as someone primarily interested in the commercial potential of the case rather than its scientific examination.

The stage magicians Milbourne Christopher and Joe Nickell, members of CSICOP, identified elements of the case as indicative of hoax and criticized the SPR investigators for being insufficiently skeptical. They demonstrated that most of the observed phenomena could be replicated through conventional means. Investigator Anita Gregory and SPR member John Beloff were unconvinced and found evidence the girls had faked incidents for journalists.

The tape recorder malfunction that Grosse attributed to supernatural activity and SPR president David Fontana described as defying the laws of mechanics was, according to Nickell, a peculiar threading jam known to occur with older reel-to-reel models of that type.

The photographic evidence of levitation was, according to investigator Melvin Harris, consistent with a child jumping from a bed, and Janet’s status as a school sports champion made the required athleticism unremarkable.

These are legitimate objections. They do not individually or collectively explain the sworn testimony of Police Constable Heeps about an independently moving chair, the Bill Wilkins voice details later confirmed by his son, or the consistency of phenomena reported by multiple independent witnesses who were not connected to each other and had no shared incentive to fabricate.

What the case leaves It does not resolve into a confirmed hoax and it does not resolve into confirmed paranormal activity. What it resolves into is a record that is more substantial and more difficult to dismiss than almost any other case of its type, produced under conditions of sustained investigation, and containing both confirmed trickery and phenomena that the investigators present could not explain through trickery alone.

Two details in particular do not disappear under skeptical pressure.

The first is PC Heeps’ affidavit. A uniformed police officer witnessed a heavy chair move four feet across a floor with no visible cause and signed a sworn legal document describing what she saw. Her career, her professional credibility, and her legal standing were all attached to that statement. She had nothing to gain from making it and everything to lose if she was wrong.

The second is Bill Wilkins. A voice emerging from an eleven-year-old girl provided details about the life and death of a previous resident of the house that the family did not know and that were subsequently confirmed by that man’s son in an independent contact with investigators. The alternative explanation requires Janet to have obtained this information through conventional means and to have deployed it over months of investigation without ever revealing how she obtained it. The son’s corroboration of specific details, including the position of the chair his father died in, is a data point that the trickery explanation does not cleanly absorb.

Peggy Hodgson stayed at 284 Green Street for twenty-five years after the activity ended. She died there in 2003. A family seeking attention or a better council house would have used the haunting to get one. She did not. She stayed.

Janet has maintained in every interview she has given across the decades since, including as an adult with no remaining incentive to maintain a fiction, that the majority of what happened at 284 Green Street was not something she or her sister produced. She has acknowledged the faking of some incidents. She has been consistent about the distinction between what was faked and what was not.

The eighteen months that ended in 1978 left behind police testimony, a voice on tape, a name confirmed by a dead man’s son, and the testimony of over thirty witnesses who saw things they could not explain.

That is the Enfield record.

It is messy, contested, and partially contaminated by confirmed fraud.

It is also the most documented poltergeist case in history.

Both things remain true.

Frequently asked questions
<div Margaret, including bending spoons on camera and banging a broom on the ceiling. Investigators estimated these faked incidents at approximately two percent of the total logged activity. The SPR committee that formally examined the case concluded there was good evidence for paranormal phenomena that could not be explained by trickery alone.

Who was Bill Wilkins?

Bill Wilkins was identified by the voice emerging from Janet as a previous resident of 284 Green Street who had gone blind in his later years and died in his favorite chair after suffering a hemorrhage. His son subsequently came forward independently to confirm that his father had lived in the house and died there in the manner described, including specific details about the position of the chair.

Did the police really witness paranormal activity at Enfield?

Police Constable Carolyn Heeps attended the house on August 31, 1977, and witnessed a chair slide approximately four feet across the floor with no visible cause. She signed a sworn affidavit describing what she saw. A second officer attended with her. Their testimony is part of the official record of the case.

Is The Conjuring 2 based on the Enfield poltergeist?

Yes. The 2016 film is based on Ed and Lorraine Warren’s investigation of the case, though their actual involvement was brief and other investigators disputed the Warren characterization of the events as demonic infestation.

What happened to the Hodgson family after the haunting?

Peggy Hodgson continued to live at 284 Green Street for twenty-five years after the main period of activity ended, until her death in 2003. Janet has given interviews as an adult maintaining that the majority of what happened was genuine. The house is still a private residence.

What is the Society for Psychical Research and should its conclusions be trusted?

The SPR is a research organization founded in 1882 to investigate paranormal claims scientifically. Its membership has included physicists, philosophers, and Nobel laureates. It is not a credulous organization: its members were divided on the Enfield case, with some convinced and others skeptical. The formal committee’s conclusion that there was good evidence for paranormal phenomena was qualified and reserved judgment on specific incidents that could not be clearly evaluated.

This case is filed as SQR-PAR-001. You are conscious before you understand that something is wrong. Then you try to move, and the attempt goes nowhere. Not heaviness. Not numbness. Something more deliberate than that. Like the instruction leaves you and is intercepted before it arrives. The body is fine. The will is fine. The space between them has been closed.

And there is something in the room.

Not in a corner. Not at the door. Nowhere specific and everywhere at once. A presence that fills the space without occupying a location, which is precisely what makes it impossible to manage. You cannot turn toward it. You cannot measure it. You can only lie there, unable to move, while it attends to you from everywhere and nowhere simultaneously.

That is the experience. Twice. Both times identical in structure.

I am telling you this before the research because the research should follow the experience, not replace it.

Sleep paralysis is a documented neurological phenomenon.

During REM sleep, the brain suppresses voluntary muscle movement. This is protective. It prevents you from acting out your dreams. Under normal circumstances, the suppression lifts as you transition to waking. Occasionally the transition misfires. Consciousness returns before the motor suppression releases. The result is a period of complete paralysis, usually lasting seconds to a few minutes, during which the brain is still generating the perceptual intensity of the dream state while the body is awake and unmoving.

The neuroscience is solid. The mechanism is well understood.

What it does not fully account for is the content.

If sleep paralysis were simply a neurological misfire, a glitch in the transition between states, you would expect the experiences it generates to be as varied as dreams themselves. Sometimes frightening, sometimes mundane, sometimes absurd. The full range of what the dreaming mind produces.

But that is not what the record shows.

The record shows something far more specific. Across cultures, across centuries, across populations with no contact with each other and no shared narrative framework, the sleep paralysis experience converges on a remarkably consistent set of elements.

The presence. Almost always there is a presence. Not just the feeling of not being alone, but something perceived as an entity, as having location, intention, and a quality of attention directed at the person who cannot move.

The interference. Not paralysis in the way a limb falls asleep. Something more deliberate. The sense that the signal is being intercepted. That the connection between will and body has been closed by something outside both.

The terror. Not the ordinary fear of a bad dream. Something reported consistently as categorically different. A quality of dread that experiencers describe as the most intense fear they have ever felt, disproportionate to anything in their ordinary emotional range.

And the presence without location. Everywhere and nowhere. Impossible to orient toward, impossible to assess, impossible to manage.

That last detail appears across accounts with a consistency that is difficult to attribute to coincidence. It is also the detail that makes the experience most unbearable. Location is how we manage threat. Remove location and you remove every tool the mind reaches for.

Whatever produces this experience knows, or behaves as if it knows, exactly what it is doing.

The names change. The entity does not.

In medieval Europe it was the night hag. An old woman, malevolent, who sat on sleepers and pressed the breath from them. The word nightmare comes from this tradition. Mare was the Anglo-Saxon term for the creature. It rode you in the night.

In Newfoundland it is the Old Hag. The accounts are consistent across generations of isolated fishing communities with limited contact with the broader European tradition.

In West Africa it is the devil that sits. In China it is gui ya, ghost pressure. In Japan, kanashibari, bound in metal. In Turkey, the dark presser. In Mexico, the dead climbing on you.

Different words. Different cultural frameworks. Different centuries.

The same interference. The same presence without location. The same quality of attention from something that cannot be faced because it has no face to face.

The neurological explanation accounts for the paralysis. It accounts for the hallucinations.

It does not account for why the hallucinations are the same hallucination.

There are two ways to approach this consistency.

The first is psychological and evolutionary. The human brain, under the specific conditions of sleep paralysis, generates threat perception. The body is immobile and vulnerable. The alarm system fires. And when the alarm system fires in the absence of a visible threat, the brain constructs one from available materials. The construction draws on deep evolutionary templates. The predator above you. The thing that pins you. The presence that has no location because, in the dark, before fire and walls, the threat could come from anywhere.

The consistency across cultures reflects not a shared external entity, but a shared internal architecture. We all have the same brain. Under the same conditions, it produces the same outputs.

This is a compelling account. It may be the correct one.

The second approach asks a question the first doesn’t fully address.

Why this specific template?

The brain has an enormous range of threat responses available. Why does sleep paralysis so consistently produce not just generalized threat, but a specific interference, a specific presence, a specific quality of attention? Why the sensation of interception rather than simple heaviness? Why the presence without location rather than the presence with one?

The evolutionary account is plausible.

It is also built to fit the data after the fact.

The question is whether it fully accounts for the specificity, or whether it smooths over details that resist the explanation.

There is a third possibility I want to name without endorsing.

What if the condition of sleep paralysis, the specific neurological state it produces, creates a perceptual opening? A brief window in which something that is ordinarily below the threshold of ordinary perception becomes, under these specific conditions, accessible?

The entity would then be real in a sense that is genuinely difficult to define. Not a construction of the frightened brain. Not a demon in the medieval sense. Something that exists at the boundary of the state the paralyzed sleeper occupies. Something that the state makes briefly accessible.

This is the oldest interpretation. It is not falsifiable. It may be wrong.

But it sits more comfortably with certain features of the experience that the neurological account struggles with. The felt reality of the presence, which experiencers consistently describe as categorically different from any dream. The specific quality of the interference, which does not feel like a body failing, but like a signal being blocked. The terror, which experiencers describe not as the fear of something imagined, but as the fear of something encountered.

The difference between those two fears is difficult to articulate.

For anyone who has felt both, it is unmistakable.

There is a detail in the accounts that I return to often.

In many reports, the experiencer describes a moment when the entity becomes aware that it is being observed in return. That the person who cannot move is nevertheless present, attending, watching back.

And something changes.

Not always. Not dramatically. A shift in the quality of the encounter. The presence adjusts. In some accounts it withdraws. In others it comes closer. In others it simply holds, as if reassessing.

This detail appears across accounts with no obvious common source. The moment of mutual attention. The awareness running in both directions.

It is either the most frightening thing about the experience.

Or the most interesting.

Because it suggests that whatever is encountered in those moments is not a passive phenomenon being perceived.

It perceives in return.

Both times I lay there unable to move, I did not see anything.

I felt something attend to me from everywhere in the room at once. And I felt, with a certainty that had nothing to do with reasoning, that it was aware of me in return. That my waking, my presence, my attention in that specific moment was not incidental to it.

That it had noticed.

I don’t know what noticed me. I don’t know if noticed is even the right word for what something like that does.

What I know is that the experience left a residue that ordinary bad dreams don’t leave. Not trauma. Something more neutral than that. A persistent background awareness, for days afterward, that the room at night is not simply the room.

That whatever I usually assume is not in it may, under conditions I don’t control and cannot predict, be there.

Attending.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" It is asked as a closing argument, and it usually works. The absence of evidence becomes, by implication, evidence of absence. The phenomena retreat into the category of belief, of wish, of cognitive weakness, and the conversation moves on to more solid ground.

I want to stay with the question instead of retreating from it.

Because I think the question itself contains something worth examining. Not the answer most people expect, but a different one. One that doesn’t prove anything paranormal exists, but that changes the shape of what we’re actually asking when we demand evidence.

First, what kind of evidence are we asking for?

The implicit standard, when someone says why isn’t there proof, is physical. Measurable. Reproducible under controlled conditions. A photograph that can’t be explained. A reading on an instrument that shouldn’t be there. A result that holds up across independent trials in a laboratory setting.

This is the standard of experimental science. It is a good standard. It has produced an extraordinary map of reality.

But it was designed for phenomena that are stable, repeatable, and observer-independent. Phenomena that behave the same way whether or not anyone is paying attention. Phenomena that submit to the controlled conditions of the laboratory without changing their essential character.

The question worth asking is whether that standard is appropriate for what we’re trying to examine.

Consider what the experiential record actually shows.

Paranormal events, across cultures and centuries of accounts, share a set of structural characteristics that are so consistent they function almost as a signature.

They are brief. They occur at the boundary of expectation, at the moment between sleep and waking, between attention and distraction, between one state and another. They resist direct observation, appearing at the periphery and dissolving when looked at straight. They do not repeat on demand. They leave impressions in memory that are unusually vivid and unusually durable, but they leave almost nothing in the physical environment that wasn’t already there.

This pattern could mean the phenomena are not real. That they are generated entirely within the observer and have no external correlate at all.

But the pattern could also mean something else.

It could mean the phenomena are real and have a specific relationship to observation. Not that they hide. But that direct, structured, expectant attention is precisely the condition under which they do not occur.

There is a principle in quantum mechanics called the observer effect.

At the subatomic level, the act of measuring a system disturbs it. You cannot observe a particle’s position and momentum simultaneously with perfect precision, not because our instruments are too crude, but because the act of measurement is itself an interaction that changes what is being measured. The particle does not have a definite position independent of being measured. Measurement is part of what produces the definite state.

I am not claiming that paranormal phenomena are quantum mechanical. That argument is usually made sloppily, and I want to avoid it.

What I am pointing at is something more general. The assumption that observation is neutral, that looking at something leaves it unchanged, is not a law of nature. It is a reasonable approximation that works well at the scale of ordinary experience and breaks down at other scales.

Whether it breaks down at the scale of human consciousness and its relationship to certain kinds of phenomena is an open question.

But the assumption that it doesn’t break down there is just that.

An assumption.

There is a researcher named Dean Radin who has spent decades running laboratory experiments on phenomena that shouldn’t exist according to the standard model. Telepathy. Precognition. The effect of intention on physical systems. His methodology is rigorous. His results are persistently, modestly above chance. His work is largely ignored by mainstream science rather than seriously engaged with.

One of his more interesting findings involves the effect of observation on quantum systems.

In a series of experiments, he found that directed human attention appeared to affect the behavior of a double-slit interference pattern. The interference pattern, in standard quantum mechanics, results from a particle behaving as a wave and passing through both slits simultaneously. When you observe which slit the particle passes through, the interference pattern disappears. The act of observation collapses the wave into a particle.

Radin found that meditators, people trained in sustained directed attention, produced a measurably larger collapse of the interference pattern than non-meditators. That conscious attention, in other words, appeared to have a physical effect on a quantum system.

This result has not been widely replicated. It may not hold up.

But it points at something that the standard dismissal of paranormal evidence doesn’t account for. The possibility that consciousness is not a passive observer of physical reality but an active participant in it. And that designing experiments that treat it as passive may be precisely why the phenomena keep slipping through the methodological net.

There is another possibility that I find worth considering.

What if the phenomena are real, and are of a kind that is genuinely incompatible with the conditions required to produce evidence?

Not because they are hiding. Not because consciousness disturbs them. But because they belong to a category of event that is, by its nature, singular and non-reproducible.

Most of what matters in human experience is non-reproducible. A conversation that changes everything. A moment of grief. The particular quality of light on a specific afternoon that you will remember for the rest of your life.

These are real.

They have effects that are measurable in behavior, in memory, in the subsequent shape of a life.

But they cannot be reproduced in a laboratory. They cannot be summoned on demand.

We do not conclude from this that they didn’t happen.

We recognize that certain categories of experience are real and are not amenable to experimental verification, and we find other ways of taking them seriously.

Testimony. Pattern. The convergence of independent accounts. The consistency of effect across different people in different circumstances.

These are not the methods of physics.

They are the methods of history, of law, of medicine before the randomized controlled trial.

They are legitimate methods.

They have limits.

They also have genuine epistemic weight.

The paranormal evidence problem may not be that the phenomena leave no traces.

It may be that we have decided, in advance, which kinds of traces count.

Here is what the record actually contains, if you look at it without the prior commitment to dismissal.

Thousands of accounts, across centuries and cultures, describing experiences with consistent structural features. Independent witnesses reporting the same phenomena at the same locations without prior contact. Researchers with mainstream credentials who encountered the evidence in the course of other work and found they could not account for it through ordinary means. Physical effects, modest and inconsistent but recurring, that correlate with reported experiences in ways that are difficult to fully attribute to coincidence or fraud.

This is not proof.

It is not close to proof by experimental standards.

But it is not nothing.

And the habit of treating it as nothing, of moving directly from absence of experimental proof to absence of phenomenon, skips several steps that intellectual honesty requires.

The steps it skips are:

Is the experimental standard appropriate here?
Are there other forms of evidence that carry weight?
Have the alternative explanations been seriously tested rather than assumed?
Are there researchers doing careful work that the mainstream has decided not to engage with for reasons that are not purely methodological?

The answers to those questions are not obvious.

They require genuine inquiry rather than the comfortable closure that comes from demanding a standard of proof that the phenomena, if real, may be constitutionally unable to meet.

I want to end with the observation that started this piece, reframed.

If any of this is real, why can’t we prove it?

Maybe because proof requires repeatability, and these phenomena don’t repeat on demand.

Maybe because proof requires observer-independence, and these phenomena may be precisely observer-dependent.

Maybe because proof requires that the thing being studied remain unchanged by the act of studying it, and these phenomena may change when you look at them directly, the way certain things do.

Or maybe because the absence of proof is itself part of the pattern.

The phenomena exist at the boundary. They appear and withdraw. They leave impressions but not instruments. They repeat across people and cultures, but dissolve under controlled conditions.

If that is their nature, then demanding proof in the conventional sense is like demanding that the horizon hold still so you can touch it.

The horizon is real.

You can navigate by it.

You will never reach it.

Some things are like that.

The question is whether that makes them not worth looking at.

I think it makes them more worth looking at.

Because the things that resist capture are usually the things that are telling us something important about the limits of the net.
